A 14 year-old mother with a newborn. A father with a severe case of lung cancer. Unemployed parents who can't afford to heat their home. A single mother who doesn't own a car or a jacket. Hungry faces.
Many of the mothers got emotional when we finished their session. Over half of the families told me that they have NEVER had a family photo taken (many of the kids were over age 10). One particular woman told me this was the very first photo she has ever been in - she said that between the lack of food, sickness, emotional and physical abuse, and her parents screaming at each other, family photos never showed up on the priority list.
I take so much for granted: family, food, health, shelter, clothing, a vehicle, opportunities... and family photos.
